Teams to end poverty

Football superstar Ronaldo visits a school in Kosovo

September 2000

The Brazilian international football star Ronaldo was in Kosovo to launch the UNDP campaign "Teams to End Poverty"

In Gjakove (Kosovo), Ronaldo personally handed over a 30’000$ cheque to provide teaching materials for a primary school run by the NGO Caritas Belgium.

Ronaldo’s visit to the school brought joy and excitement to the many students present. Previous to his visit, a drawing contest was organized and the best drawings were reproduced on the walls of the school. Ronaldo signed one of the paintings of the fresco and that part soon became a “hallowed” place of the school playground.

"No one should be doomed to a life of poverty, whether by birth or as a consequence of war," says Ronaldo. "I am particularly concerned that every child has the possibility to have an education to be equipped for life, although there are also many other ways to help. I want to say to people that we can all do something to help others improve their existence."

Ronaldo’s club, Inter-Milan, supported his trip to Pristina.
