Teams to end poverty

Ronaldo makes his return

Ronaldo makes his return to the pitch as Goodwill Ambassador for UNDP

It was as Goodwill Ambassador for that Ronaldo made his return to competitive football on 19 August 2001 at the Stadium San Siro in Milan, in a match entirely dedicated, at his request, to the fight against poverty. On that day, the F.C. Internazionale Milano took on the Nigeria’s Champion Soccer Club Enyimba.

This was the Brazilian champion’s first full match since his second knee injury that had kept him away from the football pitch since April 2000. The benefits of the match, which was broadcasted in Italy by RAI and in Brazil by O Globo, were given over entirely to projects, selected by UNDP, aimed at fighting poverty in Africa, Latin America and in Asia.

« I could not think of better way to start the season other than in a single event that brings together two great motivations: football, which is my passion, and my responsibilities, as Goodwill Ambassador of UNDP, in the service of the fight against poverty », declared Ronaldo, who secured the support of both Inter Milan and its President, Mr. Moratti in his idea for a match against poverty.
