RONALDO ANNOUNCES DONATION TO UNDP ANTI-POVERTY PROJECTS IN HAITI
UNDP Goodwill Ambassador makes a statement on the occasion of the soccer match Brazil-Haiti to take place august 18th
Brazilian soccer star Ronaldo has announced a donation of $100 000 to UNDP anti-poverty projects in Haiti. Ronaldo, UNDP’s Goodwill Ambassador, will play with his national team in a friendly game aimed at promoting peace and curbing the illicit use of small arms. The match, co-organised by the governments of Brazil and Haiti, requires those attending the game to turn in a gun in exchange for a seat in the stadium.
”I am very honoured to come to play for peace with my team in Haiti and as a Brazilian I am very proud to be one of people in Brazil making a contribution to end the years of fighting in this country. I am confident that this will be a great game and I am sure that it will set an example and will represent a valuable contribution to achieve this important goal. I am also deeply aware of the fact that Haiti is the poorest country in the Americas and I would like to take this opportunity to announce that as UNDP Goodwill Ambassador for the fight against poverty I will organise with the United Nations Development Programme the second Match Against Poverty in the coming months and that part of the funds collected will be donated to anti-poverty projects in Haiti “, said Ronaldo.
The first “Match Against Poverty: Ronaldo & Friends vs. Zidane and Friends” took place last December in Basel, Switzerland. US$800,000 were raised for anti-poverty projects in Brazil, Comoros, Guinea Bissau, Morocco, Namibia, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.
